Thankful

Of course it's that time of year...well almost anyway, when we all start expressing the many things we are thankful for. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time indeed; my very favorite holiday in fact, and a time we should focus on all that we have, although I strive to live my entire life in a state of thankfulness-not leashing my thankfulness to merely one season in the year. I love all that involves autumn, fall, thanksgiving, the change of season...all of it births warmth in my soul and for that I am grateful. I'm grateful to be alive to embrace such goodness. I know I'm getting a head start on the season-but that's ok, I can do that if I wish and so I shall.

Tonight I'm especially thankful. If you are a faithful reader or an old friend, then you know my story. I'm thankful for you, I'm thankful I have so many wonderful friends and loved ones who have supported me throughout my journey. I may have some new followers who aren't aware of my circumstances and may not understand why my heart is brimming with gratefulness on a random night like tonight. It just hit me all of the sudden. Emotions do that to me now and then.

The past few weeks have been difficult. They've been awfully heavy. I've dealt with disappointments, fears, worry, unimaginable financial struggle,
anxiety, and more. I could easily say I have been ready to give up on certain things in my life. But I've pushed through and while the storms are not over, I can feel peace in it all and I know it will be alright.

In the midst of my dark and troubled thoughts, I always grasp on to the light of knowing my children are healthy and happy. Tonight it hit me stronger than ever....as I laid down with my precious miracle child. The child who tries every ounce of my patience, yet I love her with every fiber of my being. She was the one I was told to abort. Or I would be dead in 5 years. That was a little over 8 years ago. I'm still here.
I was asked, Why do you need another child when you need to care for the 3 you already have?" Those words were like daggers in my heart. My innocent, unborn child. She was placed in my womb through no thought or action of her own. How could I, a lowly human make the decision to take her life away? She was not aware-nor was I-that not only was she placed in my body, but that an unwelcome guest known for instigating relentless fear and terror was also taking residence in my once strong, vibrant, and healthy body.
That terrible disease we all dread. The big C. It's black and ugly and no one wants it near.

"My dear, congratulations, you are pregnant! Oh yes, and, you have cancer. I'm sorry, you will have to abort your baby I'm afraid." Shock. Unbelief. Terror. Denial. These things I faced head on. And conquered them I might add.

So I was pregnant. And I had breast cancer. Lovely combo. But I was determined to fight and win the battle. No time to waste. I did as much research as I possibly could in the 3 days between my diagnosis and my surgery. Not much time at all. I wish now that I'd been able to do a few things differently but no use crying over spilt milk. I'm here and that's all that matters.

I was pushed into chemotherapy. I didn't know very much about alternative therapy. I had been a nursing major so I knew a little about what I would be facing but not nearly enough.

I had a wonderful network of friends and family who carried me through this dark time.

I delivered a beautiful healthy baby girl 6 months after my diagnosis. I went on and had chemo. She went with me to every appointment. I remember the nurses at the hospital would cry when we came. They said they just could not believe my strength. I'm not too sure what the alternative would be. Perhaps throw a fit? (I'm sure I did plenty of that when no one was looking)

I was very sad I could not nurse my baby. I tried on the "good" side. But my milk never came in. I'd nursed my other babies before her and felt robbed of that special bond with her. But she thrived regardless.

She is amazing. She had one developmental evaluation and passed with flying colors so we never went back.

Tonight, while I lay with her, as I always do, this overwhelming gratefulness flooded my soul. Like I said, I do try to live with a thankful heart, but sometimes life seems to pass by in a rush, and these deep feelings are not expressed. As I stroked her soft cheek, smelled her sweet head, and ran my finger down her profile as I always do with my babes, (I love to feel the shape of their noses-it's just such a miracle to me) my eyes welled up with tears and overflowed, my heart swelled up with emotion, and I wept. I wept in thankfulness.

I could have better clothes, I could have nicer furniture, (baby girl still sleeps on a blow up mattress) we could be able to travel and buy nice things, but none of that matters really, in the whole scheme of things. Of course, I do the proper things people do when they are struggling financially, visualize the poor, starving little Ethiopian children who would be grateful for a crust of bread, whilst my spoiled American kid's turn their noses at my lovingly prepared meals. I explain and purposely admonish them and myself, of the blessings we do have when compared to third world countries. We are indeed blessed. But tonight, that thankfulness runs just a bit deeper. I never want to take what I've been given for granted.

If I've learned anything through all of this, is compassion. I've learned that no one is immune to struggle, pain, and hardship. When I thought my life was perfect, I was presented with circumstances completely out of my control and was given a chance to fight. And fight I did. And fight I do and will continue to do.

I am thankful for the strength I have felt through my faith. My faith has kept me. It has given me peace in the midst of a storm. I can't thank my Maker enough for allowing me to walk through this valley. While I would wish this journey on no one, and would not have chose this myself, I know it has made me a better person, and one who can now reach to others and lift them up when facing uncertainty. I am thankful.

Soup is On! Chicken Tortilla Scrumdillyishioushness

Seriously, when I make this soup, I actually contemplate jumping in the pot myself to just drown in its deliciousness. However, I draw the line at drooling instead.

It's by far one of our family favorites and doesn't last long!

Chicken Tortilla Soup

One whole chicken-no guts
1 whole onion chopped
2 tablespoons ground cumin
4 cloves garlic minced
sea salt

wash chicken and put in large pot with onion, garlic, cumin, and sprinkle with sea salt. ( I don't measure so just do as much as you think you'd like.)
fill pot with water. Bring to boil then simmer for 2 hours

take chicken out and debone it but leave broth in pot.

Add to pot:
1 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
1 can corn
1 can white hominy
1 can black beans
1 bunch cilantro chopped
1 bunch green onion chopped
2 jalepeno peppers chopped

add chicken meat back in and bring to boil then simmer 5 minutes.

Serve in bowls with thicker tortilla chips like mission brand

garnish with shredded cheese and more cilantro and sour cream.

Mmmmmm...oh salt more to taste if necessary.

Good Bye Diet~Hello Gingerbread...Waffles

The words "Fall", "Autumn", "Winter", "Christmas", "Holiday", "Special", "Family" and I could go on, absolutely cannot exist without this one word. One measly little word. I bet you cant guess what it is! Well....it's "Gingerbread". The very sound makes one's mouth water. (does it not? You know you just salivated with gluttony! Hah! Gotcha!) Seriously though, if I was told I could never have gingerbread again, I may as well keel over and die.

Gingerbread has an interesting history. It's name originates from the term "gingered bread". During the Middle Ages, when food was scarce, mothers would take old, yucky, stale bread and treat it with sugar and ginger, to make it palatable for their hungry children. Can you imagine? Thus, "gingerbread" was invented.

Gingerbread is a classic holiday tradition, and one that I (obviously) render mandatory in all aspects of celebratory events.

To take this love to another level, another delicacy has been married to this classic flavor. Waffles. Gingerbread. Gingerbread Waffles. Yes. Yes indeed. Hurry up holiday season! (although sometimes we deem an ordinary evening a holiday as we indulge in this family favorite-for dinner, yes indeed)

So here is the recipe. And this one is a very old classic.

Gingerbread Waffles

First, slice bananas into a bowl of whipped cream to spoon over waffles....mmmmm....mouth is watering right now...

Ok...

1/4 cup butter (real not margarine!)

1/2 cup brown sugar firmly packed

1/2 cup light molasses

2 eggs separated

1 cup milk

2 cups sifted all purpose flour

1 1/12 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. ginger

1/4 tsp. allspice

3/4 tsp. salt

Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy; beat in molasses, egg yolks and milk.

Sift together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and salt.

Beat egg whites until they form soft peaks.

Stir dry ingredients into mixture just enough to moisten all ingredients.

Fold in egg whites

Bake in waffle iron till lightly browned. (my preference is to NOT use the Belgian waffle style iron, but that is personal)

Now...you cannot forget the next part. You must use REAL maple syrup, sliced bananas, and whipped cream to top these off adequately. You must! If you don't, you're no friend of mine! ;)

More Autumn Love~Jalapeño-Ginger-Butternut Squash Soup

Is that rain I hear? Ahhhhh...is that a fall breeze rustling the trees? No? Nope it's only the sprinkler beating the side of my house and the trees are bending heavily as they droop pathetically in the melting heat. 95 degrees today to be precise. But that won't keep me from planning and scheming for the days that are soon to come~regardless of the seemingly ending Indian summer. So, in the midst of my sweat, I submit to you my faithful readers, (all 2 of you) yet another mouth watering and utterly divine autumn recipe. This one is tried and true. It's from Sunset so how can it be bad? Do try it!

Jalapeño-Ginger Butternut Squash Soup

Aloha to Summer

Well summer is finally coming to an end. Thank the good Lord for that miraculous news. The increasingly warm temperatures are certainly not my cup of tea!

I don't usually despise summer as much as I do now; however, the past 2 summers back to back have been filled with nothing but stress and heartache for this little red hen. We have moved BOTH summers in the raging heat. And this time there was no pool to ward off the stickies. I'm not one to usually complain but wowzers....I am certainly thankful to be settled and getting back into a somewhat normal routine.

Routine has been something that seems to have eluded me for a very long time. Years in fact. Just when a routine begins to form, something always succeeds in derailing my plan and chaos inevitably dominates. Pathetic. (confessions of a 7 year veteran homeschool mom)

This year, a lot of changes have been made and I'm hoping and believing they are for the better.
The kids are now enrolled in a charter school that provides site based enrichment classes as well as math classes for the older two.
This is something they have been asking to do for quite some time. They wanted more social interaction and we needed more structure than I was able to develop and maintain.

So, even though it definitely appears rigid, I truly believe it will propel us to greater accomplishments and more effective completion of goals.

A lot of people think just because we homeschool, we don't get up early. False! We have just as much school work to get done as anyone else plus farm/household chores so it's very important that we start our mornings out bright and early.

On Mondays, everyone is home-we lay out our weekly plan, and tackle it with gusto. We start with devotions at breakfast, and then begin our studies. Ava has phonics, and then she and Caeden work on their "Little House on the Prairie" nature study guide. This is something we've chosen to add to our core curriculum. We also have some reading/writing exercises we do in addition to our school mandated lessons.

Each child has a lesson plan written out by their teacher at school. This is also a new thing for us and something I am finding EVER so helpful. My biggest problem was writing lesson plans and STICKING to them. This eliminates that problem as I don't have a choice! LOL (more confessions)

On Tuesdays, all the kids have classes at the school! For example, my 9 year old, has Guitar at 8:30, Piano at 9:10, Robotics at 10:00, Art at 11:00, and Science at 1:30. Busy day! The other kids have similar schedules. It works out nicely for me; I am able to drop them off and then do much needed deep cleaning at home or weekly farm chores before heading back into town to pick my hunnies up. It really is nice for a mom like me who can't bear to send her loves off to school full time, but needs a breather and some space.

The only problem we have had so far is that the teacher doesn't really take into consideration that the kids are tied up all day with classes, and she still assigns lengthy homework assignments for that day. We are working through this glitch by doubling up on other days but if it poses a problem I will talk to her about it.

Tuesday nights are bible study nights at church so it's a very busy day and one that must be planned out carefully.

Wednesday everyone is home again except my Ellie Wren has Spanish lab in the afternoons.

On Thursdays, Chandler has Art and Math in the afternoons. He doesn't get out till 4:00, but his buddy goes to the school next door and they walk home together-usually stopping for a milk shake from the local hamburger walk up joint. It makes my heart glad to know my kids have "places to go and people to see". I was feeling really heavy hearted for a few days because I noticed my sons were not making friends as quickly as I would have liked. I observed Chandler eating lunch all alone while all the other boys were sitting at another table laughing and having a good time. My heart just nearly ripped from my chest. I know it's typical "new kid" stuff, but it's just so sad to watch. But I know it will get better in time.

On Fridays, Ellie goes to classes on campus all day. She also gets picked up from school by her teacher with another student (her friend) and they go to the library to discuss her work etc. Being a 9th grader, she can walk to Subway, Jamba, or Panda...she really likes that. Yesterday she said, " Fridays are my favorite, because I get to go places all day...then I get to go to youth...I think Fridays are really fun" It was so cute, I kept thinking about her saying that all day-and then today she said it again! It makes me happy to know she is happy.

The rest of us just work really hard on Friday finishing up the weeks assignments. Today was really stressful. Probably my fault because I decided to make cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Not only was it hectic and messy, our brains were in sugar/carb highs and no one wanted to focus! LOL but we made it through.

So there is our new school year schedule in a nutshell! I'm still working on squeezing in some more activities such as field trips and craft/cooking/science experiment activities. And a better chore schedule. :)

Moving...the bane of my existence.

Yes we are moving again. I am not excited in the least about that fact; however, I am very happy with the reasoning behind the move.

We are embarking on a new venture in life. One that does not include pastoring a church of our own. We recently resigned the church we have pastored for 5.5 years. The feelings are bittersweet; I will cherish the learning experiences and relationships built while in Chowchilla, but I am ready to see what else is in store. We are moving to Sanger, CA. where we will attend Life Tabernacle pastored by Dean Domingues. The kids are excited to finally have a youth group to belong to. They will also be attending a charter school that they can be a part of campus based classes and they are very happy about that.
My husband is working for Acro Energy as an energy consultant. It is different that's for sure. I will be trying to get on as a sub thru Sanger Unified and also completing my teaching credential. I am also entertaining the thought of an MA in Speech/Language Pathology. That's a 5 year trek however, so it seems in my best interest to obtain the credential first. I will also be opening an etsy store and doing photography for supplemental income.

Please pray we find the perfect home and that everything goes smoothly. I am a little overwhelmed right now and covet your prayers.

Aside from that, we just returned from a glorious week in Santa Maria for Jr Youth Camp. The kids had a blast and I came home beyond wasted. It was Ava's first year as a camper. She was certainly in her element! It was awesome to see them make new friends and experience God each night.

The next few weeks will be busy while we plan and organize our life to prepare for the changes ahead. We will also be preparing to send our oldest daughter to a youth conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma called PEAK. She is elated! I can't believe my baby girl will be flying across the nation without her mum and dad. She will be flying with friends and chaperones will be awaiting their arrival. None-the-less I will be relieved once she returns home safe and sound.

So that's the latest in a nutshell! Love you all!

Running Love

This is a very exciting post for me. Normally, I do not like to discuss any "new" activities that perhaps may end up being a fly by night thing that I dibble with and then let evaporate into the abyss of past attempts of something awesome.
I do believe this post however, is relevant and acceptable as I have surpassed a personal goal of mine and do not see myself turning back now!

I believe I mentioned ever so briefly a few months ago that I had taken up running as a sport. Yes I did.

Anyway, over 6 months ago, I began running. It was a slow start. I began by purchasing a Couch to 5K app for my iPhone. I literally thought I was going to die the first week.

But I pushed thorough and was making fairly good progress. But then, we found out we had to move. And at that point, I wasn't grounded enough in the sport to really stay dedicated and I slacked off. Our new home was in a different neighborhood and it took me over 2 months to venture out. And then I hated it, I hated the streets with all the psycho dogs, I hated the tweaker pedestrians I encountered, I hated the uneven pavement and it was hot. Just too many odds were against this hobby.

But...we moved again. This time, to a great little neighborhood. But then I injured my soleus muscle. Somehow, while carrying heavy boxes upstairs I pulled it and it was extremely painful not only to run on, but to walk and do average activities. I did a lot of research and found some ways to treat the injury and over the course of a few weeks it got better. And I kept running in spite of it.

On one of my ventures, I found the coolest country pathway along the bank of a canal we call the slough. It's a redneck creek but it's peaceful and solitary. I don't go alone for now my husband is interested in running!

Anyway, I am amazed at how quickly I have been able to advance. When I thought I would die the first week, to be able to run an entire mile without stopping blows my mind. I can't help but grin as I sprint across the street as I never dreamed I'd have the strength or energy to do so.

I still have a long ways to go, I'm nowhere near my mentors Misha and Julie but I'm getting closer and closer every day!

I will be running my first half marathon in April with my husband, my brother Gabe, my sister in law Jaime, my friend Michele, and her husband, Jason. We have quite the group planning on running this race!

I am so excited and proud to be able to say I have made it to this point. I don't plan to talk about running here too often but occasionally I may post about a new hurdle I've crossed.

I would just like to say to anyone who would like to start getting in shape and taking up some sort of sport, that nothing should hold you back from your dreams. I had to realize that the clock is not going to stop for me. If I am going to be happy and healthy it is up to me and I have to put that into my life. And then begins to be a part of life you can't imagine living without. I encourage you today to jump in and try. You will not regret it.

Wishing you health and happiness!

Pertinent Information Regarding Business and Finances

This post has been brewing for some time now, and although I've already posted once today, I feel the need to air myself out in order to set the record straight.

I know for a fact that I am not alone in my feelings and that I speak for many people in various areas of business.

Especially my photog friends. I have several friends who have become very successful in their photography businesses and I am certain the feeling is mutual as to the remarks and comments received regarding their pay scale.

Most people have not a clue how expensive photography equipment is. Just to enlighten one should there be any un-informed, ONE lens worthy of fine portraiture bears a price tag of NO LESS than $1300. That's just a lens, no camera, no CF card, no tripod, no filters, no reflectors, nothing but a lens.

That's not to mention the cost of advertising and the expense of editing software, a computer good enough to handle large files, a calibrated monitor and the list goes on and on. Then there's skill building expenses and website design costs. We are talking thousands of dollars invested in a business and yet people have the audacity to make comments like "must be nice to rake in $4000 for a wedding-not bad for one days work"
These remarks chap my everlivin' hide! Some people have no idea of the hours, blood, sweat, and tears an individual has invested into their business. It did not create itself overnight without hard work and dedication.

Anyway, I do a little photography on the side here and there, mostly as a hobby because I enjoy it. But with my busy lifestyle and schedule, I can't afford to do pro bono work so I do charge nominal fees to warrant my time and I still get people acting like I'm rolling in extra cash with 2-3 little shindigs a year.

That wasn't even what I wanted to talk about in this post-that's just a smidge.

My primary direction is that of my business in breeding Australian Labradoodles. Yes, I breed them. Does that mean I just own a girl and a boy and let them get after it in the backyard, pop out some pups then turn around and sell them for $2500 a piece? Absolutely 100% emphatic NO.

Let's back up a bit. First of all, 8 years ago we lost our house due to sickness and job loss. While we have not starved (obviously) we have struggled financially ever since. We believe God is for us and will bless us if we are in alignment with His perfect will and purpose for our lives. Just like anyone, we are continually striving to find that place with Him.

Through much prayer and research, I was led to the opportunity to begin breeding these dogs. Now mind you, you can read all about our start at www.theaustralianlabradoodles.com
I am not going to go into the details here as to why someone would pay $2500 for a dog, that's up to you to research because frankly, I don't care if you understand that or not. It's a fact that people do indeed buy these dogs for that amount of money just like they will shell out $10,000 for a ring or $50,000 for a wedding. People who have money want to spend it. That's not to say however, that it's a market to jump into and expect that sort of profit to drop into your bank account. There are many aspects to be aware of and that is what I'd like to address here in this post.

First of all, when I began researching this breed, I wanted my first dog to come directly from Australia. That would cost me a mere $25,000. That didn't include a website, and all the other necessities for starting a business. I did not have that sort of money lying around to invest. So I prayed about it. I kept researching and looking into local breeders. I found one in the US I thought I would buy. My dad was going to help me make the purchase and then I'd pay him back. An intact (not spayed or neutered) Australian Labradoodle here in the states costs anywhere between $8,000-$15,000. However, at the last minute, the breeder backed out of the deal. I really don't know why but I do know you have to create a camaraderie with the breeders around. Kinda like a new kid on the block-you have to fit in and if you don't, well, then breeders back out of deals with you because they don't know you and are hesitant to let you in their circle. Crazy I know but it's a fact.
So apparently I wasn't there yet.

So I gave it even more time. And prayer. My kids really wanted a dog. I really wanted them to have one. But I also needed a way to make some sort of income at the same time. Kept praying.

Eventually, I came in contact with another breeder who agreed to take me in as sort of an apprentice. She allowed me to purchase a dog from her and make payments. So my first female dog cost $9,000. I know I know it's crazy but that's just how it is so get over it. ;)

Now, when I breed my dog: I do not own a male. I don't want to own a male for reasons I won't delve into here. So when I breed her I pay a stud fee. A stud fee is never less than $1500. Plus artificial insemination cost because otherwise each dog needs expensive testing in order to be physical. (yes, it's mandatory testing protocol in order to belong to the founders association-another area I will refrain from expounding upon)

So count that $150 plus travel expenses to and from San Diego as that's the only canine Cryobank in California.

Oh and in order for a dog to be bred in the first place, he or she must go through a series of very expensive tests. To the tune of 3-4 tests at $400 each. Yes indeed.

Oh and don't forget, in order to do AI, the female dog needs progesterone testing done to accurately time the breeding and that test is $90. Usually several tests are needed.

Ok so the dog is bred and now we have 4 puppies to sell. $2500 each or $2750 if they are rare colors. (all mine happen to be this time)

We spay them which is $120 each. We microchip them which is $50 each. We give them all their shots, we de-worm them, we start their basic training, and we do much much more in order to ensure our customers get the best start with their new dog. It adds up people! Not only do the expenses add up, have you noticed there is also a lot of knowledge required to do this? This did not evolve overnight. This took years and years of research and learning and gleaning from books and websites to become knowledgeable enough to enter this arena.

So, if one is inclined to do that research and become educated in this business then by all means go for it!

Now, I didn't spell out all the costs to have everyone counting it out and doing the math as there is still profit in the business. But a dog can only have 2 litters per year. Even if we net $8,000 per litter how would you like to live in $16,000 for your years salary? It ISN'T pie in the sky folks!

There are weeks when we live on $50 that comes into our church. Our church is very small and does not support us full time. My husband has worked many jobs to supplement our income but things do not always go as planned. So while we are grateful for this opportunity to supplement what we do have coming in, it's not by any stretch of the imagination something that's dumping great loads of wealth in our laps.

So the next time someone refers to my dog as "moneybags" I'll direct them here! And in turn make mention of their job that pays a regular salary with benefits and bonuses...we all work hard for our money and it doesn't come easy to anyone that I know for sure!

I sincerely hope I've enlightened someone as to the wherewithal when it comes to breeding animals. It's simply a job like anyone else's. With costs, overhead, ups and downs. It's not easy street or a quick money maker.

(((sigh))) I feel so much lighter now!

Natural Cleaning Stuff

Ahhhhh who does not like a sparkling clean and shiny house???? I am a fool for one that's for sure. I love cleaning supplies and new gadgets and gizmos that make life easier and my house cleaner.

I also have an infatuation with bleach. Ajax, Comet, Chlorox....you get the picture, I super duper love to scrub with these products. Unfortunately, however, bleach is NOT my friend. I have absolutely failed at making our relationship work. My husband tells me "Just don't wear your good stuff while cleaning!" I-M-P-O-S-S-I-B-L-E.

I clean every single day. I would have to stay in my grubs 24/7 if I was to stay out of my "good stuff" while cleaning.
Anyhow, it's been bothering me how I can't seem to find a balance between my love for bleachiness and keeping my wardrobe intact.

Today, however, I was routinely scrubbing my kitchen when I realized to my dismay I was completely out of bleach and Comet. I had a sink with junk I really wanted out and I also had a pot I had just made rice in that had some black flecks I wanted to disappear.

I remembered though, that I had a box of Borax in my laundry room awaiting its use in my MIY laundry detergent plan. I've used Borax for many things, mostly for carpet cleaning. It's also useful for sprinkling around a place you may think rodents or insects are entering. (thank God I'm not needing it for that right now.)

Anyhow, Borax is nothing new to our household but since my love lies in bleachy products I usually reach for them instead when the need arises.

So I thought, "Well lets give this a shot and see what happens."

Oh. My. Word. It was absolutely 100% better than bleach! I used a small chunk of it to scrub the black stuff out of the pot. It effortlessly came off-and mind you before I'd scrubbed and scrubbed with hot water, dishsoap, and a scrubber to no avail.

I then got really excited. I sprinkled it all over the sink area. Then decided the grout needed scrubbing too. And the stove. And the fridge. Sheesh! See what happens when I get excited about a product? I go ape!

Once the kitchen was nice and clean, I dried everything down then used windex to shine it up. Then I put half a lemon down the garbage disposal. Then I put a new scentsy block in my scentsy warmer. Faerie Blossom to be exact. A clean and fruity smell.

Now I am at the park basking in the sunshine knowing my kitchen is glowing with non toxic cleanliness. And my dog is trying to lick me to death while I type. I think she is rather proud of me too.

Since I'm blogging with my phone I can't insert the photos where I want to in this post but here are some shots anyway. :)

Gaaahhh Bah Humbug on New Years!

Ok ok I'm alright really I am...I do appreciate the "New Year" and the "fresh start" as some call it...but come on who are we kiddin', whether a year is a bad one or a good one it's not the year to be blamed, it's just life and life happens no matter what day, week, month, or year it is.

And new years resolutions are DUMB! Ha! Sorry to rain on anyone's parade but how many people do you know have EVER stuck a resolution out? Like an important one I mean? Reading the bible and exercise, and spending more time with family; those are great but it's awfully sad to think one needs a "new year" to increase something they should already be doing faithfully and if not surely should step up to the plate before having to label it a "New Years Resolution"! Gahhhh now you know MY take on resolutions. I don't dig 'em.

Right now, although there are many areas in my life that need tackling, I am in REST mode, I have spun my wheels, I've cooked my fingers off, I've sewed till I'm seeing needles and thread every minute, I've scrubbed and cleaned till I'm blue in the face, I've delivered puppies and cared for them (and still must) the last thing I need to do is tack on more chores. Hehehe...don't get me wrong, I'm still running-as I was before Jan 1, I still pray and read my bible, I'm spending time with the kids playing games and all that good stuff. The problem is I don't WANT to get back to reality just yet. The holidays came and went so fast for me I'm still sort of savoring them and reflecting.

I'm making a plan though, that I am. I'm making a plan for next year. A very precise and thought out plan to ensure full enjoyment of the season no matter what. Believe it or not, Ava and I began a project for a gift for next year! No longer will I procrastinate and find myself frantically sewing and scrambling for gifts. Nope.

So in a sense I guess you could say I'm moving on but I'm not going to commit to being happy about it.

Let me add one more thing that I am going to delve much deeper into in the next few weeks. For some strange reason, the New Year hoopla does not bring me sheer joy and happiness. While I can enjoy the idea for a bit, it very often triggers a serious feeling of panic and anxiety. I know it's ridiculous because sadly, the holidays do as well. But that, I must say, is my own fault. It's my own fault for not preparing and planning like I should and allowing things to pile up on me in an overwhelming manner. So, this anxiousness I tend to experience after its all said and done is cultivated by the hullabaloo people create regarding "fresh starts" etc....I get worried that I will make a plan, try to change something drastic, and FAIL. Yep, me, the wonder woman...I fear failing. It doesn't mean I don't start new plans or try anything new; I'm just saying I struggle with anxiety over these seemingly petty, yet so important things. Over plans and the thought of trying to fix something needing fixing in my world.

Okay, enough about anxiety because like I said I'm going to cover that in depth very soon and I don't want to spoil my plan. But I said all of that to simply interject my opposition of resolutions and the END of the holiday season.

Give me a week or two and I'm sure I'll bounce back to my regular super girl self but today I'm just a muddle of mess.

I love you all and thank you for letting me be me. :)

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu.....

......I'm glad to go, I cannot tell a lie!!!!!

This is my feeling for old 2011!!!!! Actually, the year hasn't been all bad...in fact, not bad at all. I really need a thankful spank is what I need!

The year has had multiple disappointments and hardships; however, it has been a year of happiness. Another year of health, and a year of growth beyond measure.

As I reflect the past year, I cannot help but feel overwhelmed with thankfulness as to God's mercy and faithfulness.

I wanted to begin this post talking about some areas I feel I have been slacking in; such as materialistic desires and ungrateful thoughts cultivated by observations of others blessings or shall I say, bad spending habits. I wanted to bemoan the fact that we have not yet purchased a house, and that we have had to resort to state assistance for medical coverage and that we have faced moments with less than $4 to our name, then I was going to slap my own hand and recount everything I have to be thankful for. But somehow I didn't start off the way I'd planned. And when it comes to writing on my blog, I like to just blurt out my feelings. It's always better that way.

So....the year started off good. Hubby had a decent job. It helped pay the bills. It was really stressful though; he had a crazy psycho lady boss named JOYCE. She sounded like a man. I think she smoked at least 4 packs a day. I could smell the nicotine even while listening to her voicemails. She was actually a demon from hell but poor hubby tolerated her as much as he could. Then one day there was a straw that broke the camels back. He could not deal with her any longer. So he told her so. In so many words...he told her where to go.

About 2 weeks later we found out her company was being sued for fraudulent activity. God knew.

So we were back to square one. We had bills to pay and kids with hopes of attending church camps. I began to sell things. I sold my camera lens. I dug into school loan money. We did what we had to do to survive. Then our work paid off. Our dog had puppies and that is a blessing business for sure. We were able to pay a large chunk of orthodontic bills. We were able to go to camp meeting and were blessed to make wonderful friends there.

We put money back into the business.

Then we found out a friend would let us live in her house while it was on the market for free. A little old 2 bedroom with an added room off the garage. We didn't realize it had no heat or a/c. It was rank. We had to rip out carpet and put in new flooring. Since it was free we didn't mind spending the money. The realtor said the sale process would be 9 months at least. Long story short, 3 months later their was an accepted offer. We immediately did everything possible to find another house. I sold my leather couch/ottoman set for a deposit.

We got the keys to the new place on October 15th. It's fabulous. I am so grateful. The buyer actually backed out of the other home but we said "good riddance". The hot water heater had burst 2 weeks prior to getting notified of the sale leaving us boiling water for baths and dishes.

Thank GOD we got out of there! It was a huge upheaval though and I feel the whole process tainted my entire year! I feel jipped from our homeschool schedule, family time, church, and so many things got jumbled during that whole ordeal. BUT I CAN'T COMPLAIN! God has been GOOD to me through it all!

I have FOUR healthy, beautiful kids! I have a husband who loves me! I live in a beautiful home! I have TRUE friends who love me! I got a brand new Kitchen Aid mixer from a sweet friend for Christmas! I have a GOD who I can depend on! I am so thankful.

BUT! I am so ready to put this year behind me! I am ready for bigger and better things. I am ready to move forward by simplifying and minimizing excess fluff in my life. I want to get back to the basics. Quit worrying about who has what and who buys what and pine for things I do not need and may not ever have. I often think I must attain certain things before my kids are grown; looking back, my parents did not have a whole lot and I turned out alright!
(right?)

Anyhow......I know this is the most rambly post everrrr but I am really just thinking a LOT and I really really really want to focus on what matters MOST. I have decided I am not ever ever ever going to be found guilty of spinning my wheels till I'm blue in the face trying to make an extra dollar or two just to have extra to spend. It's not worth it! Looking back, I remember doing so much too often when my kids were babies and I regret those wasted hours.

I.will.put.my.family.first.in.2012.

It's 1:39am and my husband is speaking in whale while he slumbers.

There. I am done.

Happy New Year folks and may you have peace and happiness now and always.

Merry Christmas!

Ahhhh....the rush is on! The heat, the panic, the FRANTIC FRENZY! I have a list a mile long that is quickly getting things "checked off", and not because they are complete either! I check them off one by one as I realize it was unrealistic of me to put them on there in the first place. Ha! Regardless, my mind is put at ease whether the tasks get done in reality or are checked off and saved for later. Meh...merry christmas anyway!

BUT...Saturday night....I was soooo very tired and just could not wait to crawl into bed and sleeeeeep...but alas, my poor overworked brain cells kicked into high gear and began to work overtime, and they reminded me that I had not done holiday photos like everyone else. Then a very deep and convicting thought process began to weigh on me. While I am busy spinning around trying to do this and that, to make sure the light bill at church gets paid, and that the laundry gets done, amidst the hustle and bustle, my own babies need to remember what the year 2011 was like and I NEED to take their pictures even if I don't have a ton of time or energy to spare. So....I quickly coordinated some outfits and we ventured out this morning in the fog. I had a few glitches with my camera lens; however, we did get a few nice shots which we will definitely be using for a holiday greeting card. Perhaps...if I end up deeming that necessary as opposed to curling up by the fire with a game and hot chocolate. ;)

A Recipe for Disaster

Sorry folks but this recipe isn't a yummy foodie one! I'm just mulling over some things today and reflecting on the vast assortment of scenarios I have been subject to observing. Some from afar; others in my own backyard. All sad, unfortunate, and such prime examples of the consequences experienced after making a single CHOICE. One choice, and an individual has a lifetime of regrets, problems, hang-ups, drama, and heartache enveloping their life forever. This vicious cycle and how it continues to circle around and around creates a deafening roar of sadness and disappointment not only to my ears, but to the ears of innocent children; whose own life, without intervention and firm guidance, will also fall prey to the cycle. And so it roars, creating havoc wherever it goes. Tearing up lives and breaking hearts.

This one choice looks something like this:

A girl...lost and alone in this world, looking for love...follows this disastrous plan.

She finds someone needier than she is. So she can feel like she actually means something to someone. She finds someone who has no self esteem, so she can again, be his saviour. She finds someone who can't stand himself. Then she can be a light unto him and make him believe his sun rises and sets on her. She finds someone who trusts no one. Someone who refuses to be subjected to any authority. Of course, all these traits are just so dashing and charming! Perhaps when you are 16 they are...in a wild and woolly way I assume. Throw anger problems into the mix. That spices things up even more dashingly. He has spunk, he has fight, he is abusive. How wonderful.

So then she jumps in even deeper...she makes a baby with this monster. Maybe that will calm him. Perhaps...he will see this innocent being and it will bring out the good that surely he has deep down inside. She doesn't consider the chance that perhaps this plan won't work. She dives off into the realm of motherhood, hoping beyond hopes this is her answer. It isn't of course. In fact, it's worse now. Add another kid. That will surely help.

Life goes on. Through the years, she continues to bend over backwards hoping her running to his every beck and call that she will someday be his angel of deliverance for his deep and immeasurable character flaws. He was handpicked by her, so she is committed to making this work. No matter the abuse, no matter the hurt, no matter the pain. She would rather live in misery then to admit she made one bad choice. One choice that led to another...and another...and yet another. Pride. It's humiliating to admit you made a bad choice. Forget the humiliation of knowing everyone sees your disheveled and unhappy life. Who cares if everyone knows your children cry at night in misery. Who cares if he even mistreats others outside of the home. Stand by your man. That's the motto.

Then...as her life crumbles and she comes to the realization that she cannot fix him, the next step is to lash out at those around her and blame them for his faults and failures. He blames everyone else, including her. She blames everyone but him. She blames the world on his problems when she was the one who made the one, single, choice.

It happens everyday. And in the field I work in, I am presented with the broken pieces of a life who craves peace. Wants to be rescued. But unless she is willing to admit a wrong choice, back up and fix the brokenness, I am of little value in the equation. I have no magic wand. Do I have God? Yes. Do I have the Word and it's beautiful truths? Yes. Can these things help her? Emphatically YES, but...unless the brokenness is identified and fixed, and the truths in the Word applied, and God made number one in both lives, I cannot help.

How does she fix it? How does he fix it? That is the age old question that not everyone agrees upon the answer to. They both, must first realize there IS a problem. He cannot continue to believe he is not wrong. He must CHOOSE to see his faults and be willing to do whatever it takes to FIX them. It's not impossible. So what if he had a bad childhood. People with WORSE circumstances come forth as gold. There is no excuse. Admit there is a problem, identify the problem, and FIX THE STINKIN' PROBLEM!

What does she do? She must evaluate with an honest heart, whether or not he TRULY admits, identifies, and is FIXING the problem. How can she do this? Through prayer. With divine intervention. With godly counsel.

And most importantly, THEY must PRAY together. This is a must. And if this cannot be done, then IT WILL NOT WORK. I don't care who you are. This is my blog and I will write what I want. People that PRAY together STAY together. Spirits are unified, bad spirits flee, trust is established, and broken hearts are mended. IF HE REFUSES TO DO THIS THEN THERE IS NO HOPE! You can go to any counsellor you choose, christian, non christian whatever you like, they can try to sort your mess of what you call life out. Hours can be spent trying to tell the full grown two year old how to act in a home. But if Christ isn't in it, IT WILL FAIL.

Please take this to heart...when you are working with teen girls...as difficult as it is to lead them and guide them, PRAY with them, plead the blood of Jesus over them to keep them from falling into this horrific trap. I can't bear to see the pain inflicted on innocent lives due to this nonsense.

Christmas Time is HERE!

I really really REALLY cannot believe Christmas is already right around the corner! I have put up about all the decor I think I will. I want to spend the rest of my time making gifts and spending time with my loved ones as that's the most important part!!!

Here are a few shots of our tree; AFTER the Christmas fairy came and repaired the broken lights and rearranged the hodge podge ornament placement. These were taken with my iPhone so don't expect great focus play tricks!

I love our fresh assortment of handpainted gingerbread children and houses, snowflakes, polka dots and glitter! This is all from last year but it's just as spectacular now as it was then.

Stay tuned for a NEW MIY decor piece on a budget!

On another note...without speaking in "Oh ye of little faith" lingo, this year is going to be quite the scaled down model of Christmas' past. Although it always seems to point that way, something always seems to give just in the nick of time. I don't doubt that can happen this year as well; however, as a mama looking out for her babes and wanting to make it the best year ever, I have to be prepared and plan around the seemingly hollow pocketbook.

I have some fabulous MIY projects brewing! I can't even begin to list them here for fear I will work myself into a panicky frenzy and excessive anxiety levels that I will fail to get them all done. But...just think homemade fairy houses and dolls...waldorfy toys made from felt, cute accessories and home decor.....
(((sigh))) I feel the panic rising already....

How 'bout I move on to what COULD happen? What COULD happen is a magic money tree could sprout up in my yard and then my WANT list would be acceptable!

I have so much to be thankful for, I feel like a spoiled child even uttering the words "want list". *slaps hand* (BAD GIRL)

How about if I change it to a "NEEDS" list?

Would a Kitchen Aid Mixer fall into a "needs" category? How about a 28mm 1.4 Canon lens? LOL Probably not...

A food dehydrator? Sounds needy to me! Or an oil expeller for my Samson Juice extractor? As you can see, I am not a bling bling girl with high hopes for material pleasures. I always covet the things that could make life a little simpler, or healthier. Oh that reminds me, I cannot forget my newest item of NEED. I am very much so coveting a pair of Mizunos running shoes. Wave Nirvana 7's to be precise. Size 7 to be even more precise. In White/Sunrise to be ultimately precise.

You see, I have taken up running and my beautiful, out of my normal budget pair of Nike's are not supporting my overpronating feet like they should. :( I have developed shin splints which are QUITE PAINFUL to say the least. Thus I NEED the Mizunos in a bad way. I am debating selling my Nike's on eBay, but can't bear the thought of being stuck with my Puma's for the duration of the transaction...(sigh) I am in a pickle indeed.

Anyway...I have lot's of projects to tackle so I'd best be leaving you faithful readers alone.

Happy December 1st!

I love letters...a Tutorial

I adore letters and words...last year after Christmas, my house felt so bare and forlorn that I went on a home decor rampage attempting to fill my poor white rental walls with warmth and happiness. I was somewhat successful...one of my endeavors, featured a very cool letter collage that I will soon be posting photos of.

However, my color scheme has changed! For some reason, I am pulling away from the blacks, reds, and warmer tones of which I have been inclined towards; and have been leaning towards cooler tones of robin's egg blue, bright cheery red, and crisp, clean whites. So I am redoing this collage and this tutorial features one of the letters.

Of course, our letter is "M". I bought this paper mache letter at Joanne's for about $4. I had painted it black and mod podged it with a black and white damask scrapbook paper so it looked like this:

This tutorial is going to show you how I did this.
(please pardon the dust on the letter, it's been in a box since moving)

Acrylic craft paint

Fresh coat of paint...I only used one coat because
I like the dark showing through for a touch of rusticness.
These are the scrapbook papers I have chosen for this new color scheme.

After the paint dried, I placed the letter on the sheet of paper
I chose to use and traced the letter with a pencil.

After tracing, cut the letter shape out of the paper and make sure it fits adequately. Trim any excess edges off as you don't want the paper bigger than the letter. A little smaller is ideal.
Then you use the handy dandy Mod Podge! (And a cute little assistant helps a lot too)

Remove the paper and paint a coat of Mod Podge on the paper mache letter. Then place the paper back on. The Mod Podge glues the paper on securely.

Use your hands to carefully smooth the paper on to the letter to reduce wrinkles or bumps. The paper may try to buckle but smooth it until it doesn't.

Then generously apply Mod Podge on top of the paper with a paintbrush. Apply Mod Podge to the sides of the letter also. This will seal the entire letter and create a nice, smooth finish.

Voila! After the Mod Podge dries, (about 4 hours) You have a beautiful letter to display however you please! Stay tuned for the completion of my letter collage and display choice!

Ahhhh Thanksgiving Eve!!! Warning...Photo OVERLOAD...

It's the day before Thanksgiving and while most folks are busy neglecting their blogs, its one of the rare chances I have to sit down and attend to mine! Thus, I have TWO posts for today.

We went on the promised nature walk yesterday so here are the pictures to prove it. Had a great time although I did not get the clippings I wanted for a holiday decor project. But I will!

Aren't these photos gorgeous! I LOVE FALL!!!!!

We went to the park for some football...

And some reading....

Annnd...swinging of course...

And yes...my daughter is a goofball...

More nature finds...

Then we went home and later that evening....

Woot!!! We are just slightly exuberant over putting up the tree!!!

And we even got the outside lights put up!

So that was our day!!!! I'll try to post pictures of the house when it is completely decorated for Christmas.
